Barbados’ firsr resident Ambassador to Brazil, Yvette Goddard.????

Barbados will have a new Embassy in Brazil by January 2010.??

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Maxine McClean, made the official announcement today as she disclosed that agr??ment has been granted by the Brazilian government for the accreditation of senior foreign service officer Ms. Yvette Goddard as Barbados’ first resident Ambassador to Brazil.

Yvette Goddard, a member of the career Foreign Service, has served with distinction in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for twenty-eight years both at headquarters and on overseas assignment in Barbados’ Missions in Washington, Caracas and Miami. Ms Goddard is the holder of a B.A. in Hispanic Studies and a Masters in International Politics. She is currently the Charg?? d’Affaires at Barbados’ Embassy in Brussels.

Barbados and Brazil established diplomatic relations in 1971. Brazil maintains an Embassy in Barbados while Barbados’ accreditation to Brazil has until now been on a non-resident basis out of Venezuela. The Embassy in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, will be Barbados’ twelfth diplomatic overseas office.

In confirming the imminent establishment of a permanent diplomatic presence in Brazil, Minister McClean emphasised that "Barbados attaches great importance to the strengthening of relations with Brazil. The opening of a resident Mission will lead to a deeper, enhanced phase in our two countries’ already close relationship. With the largest economy in Latin America, Brazil is an important partner for Barbados and I fully expect our Diplomatic Mission there to play a pivotal role in Government’s pursuit of new markets in South America in the areas of trade and investment, tourism, the cultural industries and financial services."

Senior Foreign Service Officer, Fran??ois Jackman and Attach?? Felicia Inniss are in Beijing to put logistical and administrative arrangements in place in advance of the arrival of Barbados’ Ambassador-designate, Sir Lloyd Erskine Sandiford.

Minister McClean also revealed that the Barbados Embassy in the People’s Republic of China is now a reality, with the dispatch of Senior Foreign Service Officer Fran??ois Jackman and Attach?? Felicia Inniss to Beijing last month to put all the logistical and administrative arrangements in place in advance of the arrival of Barbados’ Ambassador-designate, Sir Lloyd Erskine Sandiford. Sir Lloyd is expected to assume his duties in China by January 2010.

New??Charg?? d’Affaires in Havana, Donna Forde

With respect to Cuba, the Minister announced the assignment of another senior career officer, Ms. Donna Forde, as Charg?? d’Affaires in Havana. Ms Forde, who previously served at the Permanent Mission of Barbados to the United Nations??and at the Barbados Embassy in Washington is currently in Barbados for briefings and is expected to be deployed to Havana before the end of the year.
