Nicaragua is not only looking to deepen relations with Latin American countries but also with the Caribbean.

This declaration came yesterday from Ambassador of Nicaragua to Barbados, Ramon Enrique Leets Castillo as he paid a courtesy call on Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Maxine McClean, at her Culloden Road Headquarters.

While noting that his country’s President Daniel Ortega had urged Nicaraguan Ambassadors to be Peace Envoys, he said, "Without Peace, there is no progress".??

And, he told Minister McClean that Nicaragua was lending support to two countries, namely Colombia and Venezuela, as they sought to resolve their differences.

Senator McClean, in welcoming Ambassador Castillo to the island, assured him that Barbados would examine the many opportunities for the two countries to collaborate. She said, "The efforts of the region and indeed the hemisphere will do a lot to bring our people together."??

The Foreign Affairs Minister also made mention of the role of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in the relationship and explained that it had served the region well, providing tremendous benefits for its people, despite ongoing challenges.

Barbados and Nicaragua established diplomatic relations on November 8, 1975.
