Nine Barbadian citizens have been awarded National Development Scholarships (NDS) to pursue studies in areas that are considered vital to the advancement of this country.

These mature students are all enrolled in Masters programmes at various universities. They are: Shakirah Bourne who will be entering Queen Margaret University to start a programme in Cultural Management; Raschida Beckles who is set to study Social Policy at the University of Southhampton; Shane Austin, who will attend McGill University to study Bio Chemistry; Cabral Barriteau, whose specialty is Coastal Engineering at the University of Plymouth and Carlon Walkes, who will focus on Economics at the University of Manchester.

Other scholarship winners are: Nathan Small, whose area of study will be Food Science at the University of Leeds and Dr. Corey Forde, who will pursue studies in Infectious Diseases at the University of Toronto.?? Javon Griffith and Corey Jackman are both enrolled at Cranfield University to study Air Transport Management and Water and Waste Water Engineering, respectively.

In congratulating the NDS winners yesterday, Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Ronald Jones, reminded them that the scholarships were granted in "areas of need in the country" and that he was looking forward to the contribution that they would make to Barbados upon their return.

??"You are going into a challenging environment, but persons will respect your intellect. Don’t be distracted; remain focused," he further advised scholars, while cautioning them that they were now ambassadors for their country and should do their best to make Barbadians proud.

National Development Scholarships are offered to provide training in scarce specialist areas and those identified as priorities for the socio-economic development of the country.

Selection is made through a process of interviews by a Committee, chaired by the Deputy Chief Education Officer (Schools) with members drawn from a wide cross-section of institutions within the community.??

Applicants must be citizens of Barbados and between the ages of 18 and 40 and should have been accepted at an overseas University to pursue studies in the particular course.??kmoore@barbados.gov.bb
