Parliament Buildings will not be lit for this year’s Independence celebrations.

This was revealed by Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Dwight Sutherland, during the presentation of a $25,000 cheque by Sagicor Life Inc.  to assist with the Lighting Ceremony.

Pointing out that this was due to ongoing construction on the building, he said however, his Ministry was working with the Government Electrical Engineering Department to ensure the usual government buildings were lit.

Minister Sutherland also noted that unfortunately some sponsors of roundabouts had indicated they were not in a financial position this year to facilitate the lighting of their assigned roundabouts, but would still maintain the landscaping.

In addition to expressing gratitude to Sagicor Life Inc. for its support and commitment since the start of the Lighting Ceremony in 1996, he thanked those companies which continue to partner with the Ministry and the Community Independence Celebrations Secretariat to showcase the national symbols at Independence and what it means to be a Barbadian.
