It is time again for persons to nominate their favourite teachers for the Royal Fidelity National Distinguished Teachers’ Awards 2018.
The nomination process is now open and persons have until Sunday, November 18, to submit their nominations. Anyone can nominate a teacher – members of the community, school administrators, parents and students.
The Awards, which were instituted in 2010, are coordinated by Royal Fidelity Merchant Bank & Trust (Barbados) in association with the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training.
Royal Fidelity’s Vice President and Barbados Country Head, Jillian Nunes, called on the public to nominate teachers “who go above and beyond their mandate to our children in their care”. “Please take the time to nominate a teacher you feel is worthy of recognition,” she urged.
Ten outstanding teachers will be chosen by a ‘Blue Ribbon Judging Panel’ comprising prominent and respected persons from the education field. The teachers selected will be awarded BDS $2,000 each and will carry the coveted title: Royal Fidelity National Distinguished Teacher, 2018.
“We do this every year as we believe strongly that great teachers inspire greatness in our children. We want to show teachers appreciation by honouring them with a nomination. We also give prizes and recognition to the school with the most nominations,” Ms. Nunes explained.
Nominated teachers must be employed as full-time teachers with not less than five years teaching experience as of Monday, October 22, 2018.
Royal Fidelity offered the following guidelines to help persons decide who they might nominate for judging by the Blue Ribbon Panel. Nominated teachers should inspire enthusiasm for learning and academic excellence; elicit high levels of achievement from students in relation to their abilities; encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning; show a good knowledge of subject matter; and have the respect of students and colleagues.
Additionally, judges are looking for teachers who communicate well with parents and contribute to the school and/or community beyond the classroom.
The awardees will be selected from both public and private schools across Barbados as follows: two nursery school teachers; three primary school teachers; two secondary school teachers; one sixth-form teacher; one Special Needs teacher and one tertiary teacher from the Barbados Community College, Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology or Erdiston Teachers’ Training College.
