In light of reported outbreaks of cholera in Haiti and Cuba, the Ministry of Health is advising persons travelling from Barbados to those countries to take the following precautions.

Travellers should only drink water that has been boiled for at least three to four minutes, or treated with two drops of household bleach per litre of water (six drops per gallon of water). The water should stand for half-an-hour before use.

Other safe beverages include tea and coffee made with boiled or treated water, as well as drinks that have been bottled and sealed, such as bottled water, carbonated drinks and sports drinks.

Persons should not place ice in drinks, and should only eat foods that have been thoroughly cooked and are still hot, or fruit that they have peeled themselves.

The Ministry of Health is also advising persons not to eat undercooked or raw fish or shellfish; to avoid eating salads or other raw vegetables; not to eat foods or drink beverages from street vendors; and not to bring seafood from these countries back to Barbados.
