Celebrations to mark Barbados’ 41st year of Independence are well under way. They started in earnest last week with the Community Independence Celebrations Secretariat’s annual Lighting Ceremony in Heroes Square.
Come Saturday, November 17, the Wildey Gymnasium will be brimming with cultural activity when the Spirit of the Nation Show comes off. This spectacle, which begins at 6:00 p.m., will highlight the best aspects of the individual parishes through their talent, fashion, costumes, music, the Parish Ambassadors and respective parish projects.
The other high points of the celebrations include the National Independence Service which will take place on Sunday, November 25, at 4:00 p.m. at the Sherbourne Conference Centre under the theme “Rising to Higher Heights in and through God”; and the Prime Minister’s official reception at Ilaro Court at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 29.
These will be followed by the combined Independence Ceremonial Parade of uniformed armed and unarmed national organisations at the Garrison Savannah on Friday, November 30, at 8:00 a.m., and the National Independence Honours and Awards Ceremony at Government House at 4:30 p.m. that same day.
On Sunday, December 2, from 7:00 p.m., patrons attending this year’s Community “Indepen-dance” Finals at the Wildey Gymnasium will be treated to
diverse rhythmic talent as contestants showcase different genre of dance. Ten dance groups will be vying for the top prizes.
The curtain will come down on this year’s official Independence celebrations with the NIFCA Awards Ceremony. This event will be held on Sunday, December 9, at Ilaro Court and starts at 6:00 p.m.
