Members of the public will soon have an opportunity to view one of the world’s finest private collections of western art by famous European artists over the past 400 years when an Open House is held at Colleton Great House, St. Peter, on Sunday, March 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Also on display will be the Frank Rickwood collection of indigenous art, which includes 157 pieces from Africa and Papua New Guinea. These artistic pieces have been described by Caribbean academic Lennox Honychurch as “remarkable by any standard”, while they were highly praised by the Smithsonian Institute.

Those touring the Open House will also be able to attend a lecture at 4:30 p.m. entitled,Presence and Place: Images of Africans in 18th Century British Print Culture, by Dr. Temi Odumosu, a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow for EUROTAST at the University of Copenhagen.

The Barbados Museum and Historical Society is hoping to acquire the collections at Colleton Great House and it is hoped that the Open House would assist in raising funds to achieve this goal. For ticket information on the Open House or to reserve space at the lecture, since seating is limited, the public should call 427-0201 or emailinfo@barbmuse.org.bb.

When Sir John Colleton fled from England after the execution of King Charles I during the civil war, he bought 700 acres of land in Barbados, became a sugar planter and established Colleton House. The house was later acquired and restored by Australian geologist Frank Rickwood in 1989, and it was his home until his death in 2009.
