The public will get another opportunity to learn about human trafficking when the National Task Force Against Trafficking in Persons hosts two outreach activities tomorrow, Friday, July 29.

Members of the task force will be at Sheraton Mall, Sargeant’s Village, Christ Church, and Sky Mall, Haggatt Hall, St. Michael, between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., to distribute memorabilia and brochures, as well as share valuable information on human trafficking, in an effort to help persons recognise the signs, so they are aware of this global problem.

At noon, actress Jennifer Walker will perform a skit on human trafficking in the food court, at Sheraton Mall.

The outreach activities are part of the island’s sensitisation and education drive to bring awareness to human trafficking, which Attorney General Dale Marshall recently described as a “vicious crime” and “an attack on a person’s human rights”.

Barbados will join countries across the globe to observe World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on Saturday, July 30, under the theme: Use and Abuse of Technology

Human trafficking has been described by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of people through force, fraud or deception, with the aim of exploiting them for profit.

“Men, women, and children of all ages and from all backgrounds can become victims of this crime, which occurs in every region of the world. The traffickers often use violence or fraudulent employment agencies and fake promises of education and job opportunities to trick and coerce their victims,” the UN website stated.
