More than 700 Barbadians are set to graduate next month with certification in National or Caribbean Vocational Qualifications provided under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council.

This is when the Competency-Based Training Fund Management Unit (CMU), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (METI), and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), hosts its second graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 1.

The ceremony will take place at the Hilton Barbados Resort, Needham’s Point, St. Michael, at 5:30 p.m. It will be attended by officials from the IDB, METI, the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Human Resource Development, the TVET Council and key stakeholders within the private sector.

Labour Management Advisor of the Barbados Employers’ Confederation, Brittany Brathwaite, is expected to deliver the feature address.

In November 2012, the IDB and the Government of Barbados entered into a loan for the implementation of the Skills for the Future (SFTF) Program. This programme was designed to support the Barbados Human Resource Development (HRD) Strategy with an emphasis on improving the quality and relevance of secondary and post-secondary education and the effectiveness of TVET here, using a demand-driven, market-based approach.

The CBTF represents Component 1 of the SFTF Program, and its objective was to support a better alignment of the supply of training with the demands of the market.

Through partnerships of employers and training institutions, the CBTF facilitated training and certification in specific occupational areas using the competency-based approach to training and learning.

These selected partnerships included traditional and emerging economic sectors; private and public training institutions, including three secondary schools; skilled and unskilled workers; as well as the unemployed.
