Tourism workers will have their opportunity to shine, when a number of activities are held to celebrate Tourism Week.

The festivities begin tomorrow, Saturday, September 24, with Speightstown Sizzlin’, at the Speightstown Esplanade, St. Peter, at 6:30 p.m. The community tourism event will feature several performances, including pieces from tourism workers.

Then on Sunday, September 25, workers and industry players will attend a church service to officially commence Tourism Week at People’s Cathedral, St. Michael, starting at 10:15 a.m. Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Richard Sealy, is expected to address the congregation.

On Tuesday, September 27, Mr. Sealy will lead the Tourism Parade through Bridgetown, beginning at Queen’s Park at 10:00 a.m. It will include workers from across the sector, accompanied by the Royal Barbados Police Force Band, children in uniform and traditional folk characters. The parade will culminate at Jubilee Gardens where presentations and brief remarks will be given.

The following day, Wednesday, September 28, the Barbados Tourism Product Authority, along with other stakeholders, will conduct a clean-up of Carlisle Bay. The campaign, which seeks to encourage Barbadians to be a part of the solution to pollution, is entitled: Clean Bim, and will begin at 7:30 a.m. On Thursday, September 29, in acknowledgement of World Maritime Day, students of St. Paul’s Primary School will visit Atlantis Submarines.

The Ministry of Tourism will also hold a symposium on Friday, September 30, at the Courtyard by Marriott. The symposium, which runs from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., will focus on ideas for a fully accessible Barbados.

It will feature presentations from representatives of the Town and Country Development Planning Office, the Barbados Council for the Disabled, the legal profession, community groups and the transportation sector. There will be a panel discussion entitled: Embracing travellers with disabilities….are we ready?

On that same day, Deighton Griffith Secondary School, Christ Church, will host a school tour entitled: I am Tourism. This event aims to raise awareness of the importance of tourism to Barbados, and to educate and sensitise Barbadians about their role in the industry. There will be several speeches, presentations, and performances.
