The public will hear more about the contribution of women to this island’s development when a panel discussion is held on Wednesday, February 18, at Solidarity House, Harmony Hall, St. Michael, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Its theme will be “Care-giving, Supporting, Developing and Leading: Women’s Contribution to Nation Building”.

Panellists are Deputy Principal of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Professor Eudine Barriteau, who will speak on the women’s social and economic contributions, while Historian and tutor at the Barbados Community College, Trevor Marshall, will look at the historical role.

Executive Co-ordinator of the Caribbean Policy Development Centre, Cecilia Babb, will examine the political involvement, while Reverend Elesius Joseph, will discuss the religious aspect. Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Care, Ruth Blackman, will moderate the session.

This event is being hosted by the Bureau of Gender Affairs to observe the Day of Women of the Americas, on February 18, which was established in 1982 by the Organisation of American States (OAS) General Assembly.

The day is used to highlight the vital role women have played as agents of social change. Its main objective is to stimulate new initiatives and establish programmes of action dedicated to involving women fully and permanently in the countries’ development.
