Springer Memorial Secondary School has started a Parent University.

It is the brainchild of Francis Thompson, a Senior Teacher assigned to first forms at that school, and is in keeping with the Schools??? Positive Behaviour Management Programme (SPBMP) that places emphasis on parental involvement.

The Parent University sessions are conducted in collaboration with other teachers at the school and are usually held twice per term.??A key aim is to educate parents on topics of relevance to them and their charges.

One example was a session last term on the Caribbean Certificate on Secondary Level Competence, which arose out of concerns expressed by parents following a form level meeting earlier in the school year. That session was facilitated by Acting Senior Education Officer responsible for Curriculum, Fernando Carter.

The first session for the Hilary term will be held on Tuesday, January 27, with the focus on health and fitness, a topic deemed timely as students will be heavily involved in sporting activities this term.

The session will be conducted in the Home Economics laboratory from 3:00 until 4:00 p.m. It will provide information on: What is Good Nutrition? The Correlation between Good Nutrition and Learning Development, as well as Foods for Students to Avoid or Use Sparingly.

It will also include practical demonstrations and examples of nutritious snacks or meals that are not time consuming or costly. A fitness professional is also expected to be on hand to advise parents on the advantages of physical exercise and its link with cognitive development and the general health of children.
