With summer just around the corner, parents are being encouraged to sign up their children for a camp or some other productive initiative.

Acting Assistant Director of the National Sports Council (NSC), Adrian Donovan, said: "During this period a number of children are unoccupied for one reason or another, and it is advisable that parents enrol their children in some kind of constructive activity."

Mr. Donovan noted that when children were idle they sometimes got into mischief and stressed that attendance and participation at camps should keep them focused on other areas.

A variety of camps are expected to be offered this summer, including those sponsored by Government, from July 6 to August 14,and the NSC, which will run from June 29 to August 7.

The Council has been staging this specialised sports camp for the past 24 years for children between the ages of eight and 16 who want to learn a sport, or take their game to another level.

About 1400 campers participated last year and Mr. Donovan disclosed that the Council was preparing for over 1000 children this time around. He urged those parents who were interested to register their children at the NSC from next Monday, June 15, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Eighteen disciplines will be offered and the Acting Assistant Director pointed out that swimming was the most popular sport, followed by football, netball and cricket.?? "But the numbers tend to grow for badminton, hockey, table tennis and lawn tennis… We also offer volleyball, football and basketball for girls and those numbers have been encouraging over the years," he said.

Several tours are being planned for the campers, including a visit to Harrison’s Cave, a Harbour Master cruise, an Atlantis Submarine trip, a visit to Folkestone Museum and a ride on a glass bottom boat and a hiking expedition. In addition, lecturers will be brought in at intervals to discuss various topics, including hygiene, etiquette and how to save/manage finances.
