Minister of Family, Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley. (FP)??

This island’s Minister of Family, Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, has added his voice to the warning issued to parents by the Royal Barbados Police Force to know where their children are at all times.

Mr. Lashley said that with summer holidays quickly approaching and Crop Over activities increasing, parents should "be ever mindful of your children and their activities".

The Minister made the comments over the weekend while addressing the Division of Family’s Community Outreach Programme for parents at Vauxhall Primary School.

He noted that this initiative would be one of the many events/strategies his Ministry would use to work with families across the island in an effort to offer them necessary support and counselling to enhance their lives.

"I, like you, am aware that there is no manual that can properly prepare you for taking on one of the most important and rewarding roles – that of a parent. However, by engaging with trained, competent counsellors and other professionals, and by sharing our experiences, we would be able to perform that role more effectively…

"I assure you that this community outreach programme will not be a one-off event, but we will be moving around the island, touching communities and working with the various community leaders to design and offer programmes that will improve the quality of life for all persons…," Mr. Lashley promised.

Since 2009, over 295 persons have participated in various Positive Parenting Seminars hosted by the Division of Family and Youth, while 134 persons have been trained during the six Positive Parenting Skills Training of Trainers sessions.
