Thirteen Permanent Secretaries from several ministries across the public sector will soon get an opportunity to increase their knowledge about this island’s rich heritage.
They will be taken on a tour of Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison on Sunday, May 20, beginning at 4:00 p.m. They will assemble in Heroes Square, the City and visit a number of locations, including Suttle Street, Synagogue Lane, Queen’s Park, Bay Street, the Garrison, and the Pierhead.
The tour, to be conducted by historians Dr. Pedro Welch and Karl Watson, has been organised by the Division of Culture and Sports. It is part of the lead up to the official inscription ceremony for Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison which will be held on Wednesday, June 13, at the Garrison Savannah, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Members of the public are invited to attend.
Historic Bridgetown was inscribed as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s World Heritage Site last June in Paris. World Heritage sites are places on earth that are of Outstanding Universal Value to humanity and as such, they have been put on the World Heritage List to be protected for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
This is Barbados’ first World Heritage Property and it is believed that the island will receive numerous benefits from the designation, including greater access to international support through financial aid and technical assistance for the preservation and conservation of the Property.
