The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security reminds persons how to properly dispose of pesticide containers. (BGIS)

A campaign to heighten awareness among farmers about the importance of proper disposal of pesticide containers kicks off Thursday, July 29, at 9:30 a.m. at The River Plantation, The River, St. Philip.

The Pesticide Container Management Scheme, an initiative of The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security will see Minister of Agriculture, Indar Weir, addressing farmers and officially launching the campaign via a recorded message.

Representatives of companies involved in the importation, distribution and disposal of pesticides and/or the containers are expected to attend; these include representatives form Carter’s & Co., Massy Distribution Ltd. and Sustainable Barbados Recycling Centre (SBRC).

Officials of the Agriculture Ministry, the Barbados Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation, the Environmental Protection Department, and the Occupational Safety and Health department of the Ministry of Labour and Social Partnership Relations will be in attendance. 

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations will also participate.
