A competition launched by the Pig Farmers Co-operative Society Limited to recognize the value of pork on the market has received praise from Minister of Small Business, Entrepreneurship and Commerce, Dwight Sutherland.
Addressing the launch at Tweedside Road, St. Michael, Minister Sutherland said he considered it creative as a marketing strategy, and congratulated management for the initiative dubbed “Win A Hog”.
“It is imperative for the survival and growth of your cooperatives to develop new ideas and strategies that will spur growth. Creative ideas such as this will assist with further market penetration and allow your products to be highlighted and be differentiated from the competition,” he said, while pointing out that co-operatives had assisted in stabilizing the Barbadian economy because they had originated as, and still remained, community-based anchored businesses.”
The Pig Farmers Co-operative Society Limited was officially established in December 1992 at the Grotto, Beckles Road in St. Michael, and has been operating for 23 years at Tweedside Road, St. Michael.
Acknowledging that they had “stayed the course”, Minister Sutherland attributed this to their unity, hard work, and a sense of purpose and loyalty. And, he added that its membership of 350 farmers would have assisted in creating employment for nine persons.
He stressed it had also enabled the society to turn over an estimated $2.5 million in sales annually, with an asset base of approximately $370,000.
Further lauding them, he said: “I am therefore proud to stand here today as Minister of Small Business, Entrepreneurship and Commerce to recognize the positive impact this society has had not only on your members but on the community and the country in which you operate.
“The impact on the community and the country that this society continues to have can be easily demonstrated by highlighting that during the period January 2019 up to the third week in September 2019, this society sent 916 whole carcasses to HIPAC, a division of Hanschell Inniss Limited. This is significant when one recognizes that Hanschell Inniss Limited, Barbados’ premier distribution company, has been a leader in the marketing and distribution of fast moving consumer goods for over 100 years, handling a wide range of consumer products and representing leading regional and international brands.”
