The Lands and Surveys Department and the Barbados Licensing Authority are next in line to be upgraded under Government’s Public Sector Modernization Programme during the new financial year.

Minister in the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Smart Technology, Senator Kay McConney, made this disclosure on Monday on the heels of the official launch of the online Police Certificate of Character in the Prince Cave Hall at the District “A” Police Station.

She noted that those two departments were among seven key agencies identified as “first movers” to receive priority funding under the four-year Inter-American Development Bank programme, designed to modernize the public service.

“We would like for that to end by the end of the next financial year, which would be April 2021,” she said.

The Minister added that there was still a bit of digitization and modernization to be done across government, but noted that they were taking “small steps” before making “giant leaps”.

“But as we are taking those smaller steps, we are bringing along as many of those workers as we can until we have the capacity to be able to accommodate more,” she added, noting that more persons would be engaged as the project rolled out.

Senator McConney also stated that they were in the process of building out a record centre for government, which will also have a Scanning Bureau.

“Unless you have a facility that can accommodate that number of people, you will continue to have to be doing those small steps, and so we are putting ourselves in a better position to be able to engage in your process,” she pointed out.
