Cheaper fruits and vegetables and outreach through community visits from nurses are among measures Government is seeking to undertake to improve the health of the nation.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley disclosed this during her address to the nation last Thursday.

She said that chronic non-communicable diseases continued to be an issue for the country, and urged Barbadians to take control of their own health and wellness going forward.

However, she said that Government was seeking ways to allow access to fresh fruit and vegetables at cheaper prices, particularly for those suffering from chronic non-communicable diseases such as diabetes.

In addition, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital has been asked to establish a massive community outreach programme for the engagement of about 30 community nurses, who will be responsible for visiting a large number of patients in their homes and communities to ensure that they are managing their processes well.

“Part of that outreach exercise has to be to put personal trainers in communities to get particularly our elderly and indigent moving.  Without exercise, we are not going to win the battle,” the Prime Minister stated.
