Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley this morning expressed sympathy to United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the loss of nearly two dozen UN staff in a plane crash in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa yesterday.
Ethiopian Airline Flight 302, commonly referred to as a “UN shuttle” was en route from Addis Ababa to Nairobi, Kenya, when it crashed shortly after take-off, killing more than 150 people.
“On behalf of my government and the people of Barbados, I express heartfelt condolences to Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the entire United Nations family as well as the families and loved ones of all the victims,” Prime Minister Mottley said. “We also extend deepest sympathies to the Government and people of Ethiopia at this time of pain.
“While tragedies such as this always result in considerable sadness, we are very mindful of the fact that in this instance the pain must be magnified, given that the victims were from more than 30 countries. We in Barbados therefore extend sincere condolences to loved ones everywhere who are impacted by this unfortunate tragedy.”
