Prime Minister, David Thompson, presenting??a token of appreciation to new High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to Barbados, Paul Brummell, at Ilaro Court.

Prime Minister David Thompson recently had another opportunity to voice his concerns about the Air Passenger Duty (APD), which was recently implemented by the United Kingdom (UK).

It was during a courtesy call which was paid on him by newly appointed High Commissioner of the UK to Barbados, Paul Brummell, at Ilaro Court last Friday.??

During the meeting, Mr. Thompson reiterated the likely negative impact that the passenger tax would have on tourism in the region. He also said he hoped that there would be an opportunity to discuss the matter with British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, at the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Trinidad.

The envoy acknowledged the concerns, and noted that "the strength of feeling here in Barbados" was being made known in the UK.??

Climate change was another major topic of discussion, with both parties expressing concern about its possible devastating effects. Mr. Brummell also told the Prime Minister that he was pleased with the bilateral relationship in this area.??

The progress of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) was also an area of focus. Prime Minister Thompson indicated to the High Commissioner that the controversial issues, such as freedom of movement and governance structures would be discussed in more detail early next year, at which time the course of CSME would be re-charted.????

Collaboration in the area of drug interdiction and the CARICOM Development Fund were also included in the talks.
