Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has identified training as one of the key areas to assist Barbados in getting back on track.
Ms. Mottley expressed this view on Friday as she delivered the feature address at the Sandals Global Sales Conference, which is being held at Sandals Royal.
Underscoring the importance of training, she said: “As we confront this reality and make the adjustments, we have determined that it is not good enough to go back to where we are. We need to go to where we want to be and in those circumstances, we have coined a programme which we feel will help us reach that destination of excellence.
“And being Bajans, we call it the RERE Programme and you will see why in a few days when we talk further. But it is about retooling and empowering, it is about retraining and enfranchising [RERE], it is about being able to … cause our people to live the best life that they can.”
Stating that change was uncomfortable but necessary, the Prime Minister expressed the view that retooling and empowering persons would help to manage change. “What helps us succeed and overcome the changes that we must make is the retraining and the enfranchising.
“When we say that our route to excellence is the RERE Programme, it is because we believe that if we do these things we will give you a better product to share with the rest of the world; better returns at the corporate level and better returns at the individual level,” she pointed out.
According to her, Barbados, like many other nations, had to remain focused if it was to give that best experience that tourists required. She told the sales team that the country did not take for granted the work they put in.
Ms. Mottley said that if Barbados was to survive and to transform, things must be done differently. “We have all to up our game…because the day that we sit on our laurels, is the day that we accept that we have nothing better to learn and nothing better to share. So, the stretching that is critical to move to the next level is not something that is going to be your preserve alone as salesmen, but I give you the commitment that it will be our commitment too…,” she stressed.
She reminded the salespersons that tourists had choices and they would exercise them. “So, if we don’t demand attention by how we perform, by how we look and by how we do what we do, we are not going to get that market share that is going to make your life and our lives a little sweeter,” she suggested.
