Barbados remains committed to deepening and strengthening its relationship with the Republic of Cuba.

Prime Minister Freundel Stuart gave this assurance to Cuba???s new Ambassador to Barbados, Francisco Fern??ndez Pe??a, during a recent courtesy call at Government Headquarters.

Also present were the Ambassador???s wife Ana Labaot de Dios, who is the First Secretary and Consul, as well as local government officials.

Describing the friendship both countries share as ???very special???, Mr. Stuart said Barbados had spearheaded the move for CARICOM to establish diplomatic relations with Cuba in 1972.

???That relationship between CARICOM and Cuba has also grown and we intend for it to continue. We respect very highly what Cuba has been doing in the Caribbean and beyond. It has been putting at the disposal of CARICOM countries medical expertise from which disadvantaged people in the Caribbean have benefited,??? he stated.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged Cuba???s frontline efforts in West Africa to assist in bringing the deadly Ebola virus disease under control.??During the wide-ranging discussions, Prime Minister Stuart applauded the people of Cuba for the way they have handled their challenges over the years.

In addition, he assured Ambassador Fern??ndez Pe??a that Cuba could continue to count on Barbados??? fullest support.??Mr. Fern??ndez Pe??a said he looked forward to working with Barbados to enhance cooperation between the two countries.

He noted that the agenda for the upcoming Fifth CARICOM-Cuba Summit, on December 8, was currently being finalised by the two sides.??He pointed out that the Heads of Government would have an opportunity to discuss the various global problems currently affecting this region.
