Prime Minister Freundel Stuart has called on Barbadians to continue reflecting on those features of Barbadian life that must be reclaimed, retained or thrown out urgently.

Mr. Stuart issued the call last evening while delivering remarks at the annual Crop Over Festival Reception at Ilaro Court.

He said: “I hope you have been reflecting on these questions and understanding their importance because they are going to determine what priorities we set for ourselves over the next 50 years. They are going to determine what kind of society we create for those who have to come after us…

“They are questions that apply to each of us as an individual as well… so we can be better citizens…. I hope you will reflect on these questions, answer them honestly and let us all resolve collaboratively to make Barbados a much better place than it has been over the last 50 years, great a place though it has been over the last 50 years.”

Those questions which the Prime Minister has been asking Barbadians to reflect on as they celebrate the country’s 50th Anniversary of Independence are: What are those features of Barbadian life that we have lost over the last 50 years that we need to try and reclaim? What are those features of Barbadian life that we have not lost over the last 50 years and that we need to try at all cost to retain? What are those features of Barbadian life that we have not lost but we need to lose as soon as possible because they are not enhancing our image as a nation?

Mr. Stuart said that because of the loyalty, commitment, hard work and high standards of Barbadians wherever they could be found, a nation which was the envy of many others, small and great, was built.

He stressed that the country’s size had never been a determinant of its people’s capacity to dream. He noted that Barbados has had a very distinctive voice in international affairs, making it clear that it was not interested in getting into any country’s squabbles and that it would be friends of all and satellites of none.

Those who performed during the night included Junior Monarch Summa; Pic-o- De Crop winner, Azziza; Party Monarch, Lil Rick; Peter Ram; and Marvay.
