Prime Minister Freundel Stuart will leave the island today, Friday, September 19, for a private visit to Canada.

While there, he will deliver an address at the annual Errol Barrow Memorial Dinner which is sponsored by the Toronto branch of the Democratic Labour Party.

Mr. Stuart will also attend the UN Secretary General???s Climate Summit on Tuesday, September 23, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where he will address the plenary, attend a Private Sector Forum lunch, and later co-chair a session with Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt on Energy in the Multilateral and Multi-Stakeholder Action Forum.

This Summit of Heads of State and Government has been convened by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The high-level meeting, which is expected to attract over 100 world leaders, will give Heads of State and Government an opportunity to confirm their support for reaching a meaningful global climate change agreement in 2015, at the upcoming Conference of the Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change in Paris.

Prime Minister Stuart said the meeting would be used by small island developing states (SIDS) to continue to highlight the effects of climate change and to build on the goodwill and interest they attracted at the recently held Third SIDS Conference in Samoa.

The Summit provides a unique opportunity for leaders at the highest level from all UN Member States to champion an ambitious vision, anchored in action that builds a more sustainable, climate resilient and prosperous world for all and helps place the world on a trajectory to keep temperature rise below two degrees centigrade???.

Climate change is said to be disrupting national economies and is having very real consequences on people???s lives, in particular those in small island developing states like Barbados, through phenomena such as sea level rise and ocean acidification.??Mr. Stuart will return to Barbados on Monday, September 29, and in his absence, Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Richard Sealy, will act as Prime Minister.
