Prime Minister, David Thompson

A home for Alliance Fran??aise, and a waiver of the visa requirement to French territories in the Caribbean, were the main issues discussed during a recent meeting between Prime Minister David Thompson and France’s Ambassador to Barbados, Michel Trinquier.

During the talks, it was noted that a Director of the Alliance Fran??aise had been appointed last year, but her ability to perform had been hindered by the absence of a headquarters. It was therefore agreed that further discussions would take place with other Ministries to explore possible solutions to this challenge.

The requirement for Barbadians to appear in person at the French Embassy in Trinidad to apply for a visa to travel to the French territories in the Caribbean, namely, Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, St. Martin and St. Barthelemy, was also highlighted.

It was agreed by Prime Minister Thompson and Ambassador Trinquier that the stipulation was a hindrance to the further development of relations between the two countries, especially in areas such as student exchanges. The two officials concurred that negotiations should continue about this matter so that the best possible resolution could be found.

The possibility of concluding a double taxation agreement was also considered during the courtesy call.

The Government of Barbados established diplomatic relations with the Government of the Republic of France in May, 1968.
