Dedications of appreciation and thanks were the order of the day, when the Police Co-operative Credit Union Limited (BPCCU) launched The Carter and Hutson Memorial Scholarship Trust last Wednesday.
The event, which also saw the unveiling of a memorial plaque in honour of the founding fathers of the institution, awarded persons whose efforts were recognised as true acts of dedication and selflessness.?? Senator Haynesley Benn, in his capacity as Minister of Commerce and Trade, addressed the gathering and lauded the continued efforts of the Co-operative. "…You were registered on this date exactly 50 years ago, and at that time, you were the 12th Credit Union to be registered in Barbados.?? During those 50 years, the Credit Union has developed into a society which is well equipped to satisfy the needs of its members.?? During the last 10 years, the Barbados Police Co-operative Credit Union has continued to grow in proportionate terms with the industry to attain 20.6 million dollars in assets at the end of June 2010…I am sure it is through prudent corporate governance and the discipline which the police force brings to bear that, 50 years later, the society continues to be in good financial health…," Minister Benn told his audience.

The Commerce and Trade Minister emphasised that credit unions continue to hold a vital place in society, not only in their financial contributions, but also in their focus on philanthropy.?? The BPCCU has established The Carter and Hutson Memorial Scholarship Trust, a posthumous honour for BPCCU pioneers Lionel Carter and Kenrick Hutson, to assist persons in the completion of studies at the Barbados Community College and the University of the West Indies.??
The trustees are Mr. Robert Morris, renowned trade unionist; Mrs. Halda Davis-Woodroffe, Assistant Registrar of Public Information at the UWI; and Grantley Watson and John Sealy, both former police commissioners.?? The trust will provide awardees with between $1,500 and $2,500 towards their studies.????
The BPCCU’s 50th Anniversary Celebrations continue on Saturday, November 27, ??with an Awards Ceremony at the Accra Beach Hotel, and will end on Independence Day, Tuesday, November 30, with a night-time cricket match, which will feature the BPPCCU team versus The Media, at the Weymouth playing field, Roebuck Street, St. Michael starting at 7:00 p.m.??nekaelia.hutchinson@barbados.gov.bb
