Barbados has recorded a 24 per cent decrease in crime for the first four months of this year in relation to most categories of crime.

These statistics were revealed today by Acting Commissioner of Police, Tyrone Griffith, as he addressed the Barbados Police Association???s Annual General Meeting in the Prince Cave Hall of the District ???A??? Police Station.

Mr. Griffith said that for the first four months of this year, there were 73 reported robberies compared with 169 in 2013, representing a reduction of 57 per cent.

He added that theft from persons stood at 46 for 2014 as opposed to 126 cases for the same period last year, reflecting a reduction of 63 per cent in crime; while residential burglaries fell from 602 in 2013 to 375 this year, representing a 38 per cent decrease.

Cases of commercial burglaries also fell from 167 in 2013 to 113 recorded for the first four months of this year, showing a 32 per cent decrease in such crimes.

???This significant decline has been buttressed by the fact that to date we have been able to solve most of the most serious crimes occurring throughout Barbados. This is due to a collaborative effort of all, but led by the investigative and intelligence wings of the force,??? Mr. Griffith said.

Noting that the Royal Barbados Police Force (RBPF) was placing emphasis on intelligence-led policing, the Acting Commissioner noted that of the 10 murders recorded so far this year, eight were solved, and police were on the verge of a breakthrough in another case.

Mr. Griffith publicly commended officers for the work they were doing in reducing crime on the island, which for the first four months of last year spiralled upward by three per cent.

Lawmen were also commended by Attorney General, Adriel Brathwaite, who noted that the RBPF was still recognised as one of the leading police forces throughout the region.
