Anyone who threatens to blow up a building will feel the full weight of the law.

This was announced today by Public Relations Officer of the Royal Barbados Police Force, Station Sergeant Anthony Depeiza following an increase in bomb threats to a number of government departments, private businesses and schools recently.

The Station Sergeant pointed out that such behaviour not only causes disruption but a climate of fear.

As a result of these threats, members of the Royal Barbados Police Force are intensifying their investigative efforts and will continue to put measures in place to minimise any unnecessary disruptions as well as to identify and apprehend those persons responsible for perpetrating these offenses.

Furthermore, the Royal Barbados Police Force is reminding persons that under section 81(1) of the Telecommunications Act, Chapter 282B of the Laws of Barbados, that:

“A person who sends or publishes by means of a telecommunication network or an annoying, offensive, threatening, obscene or abusive message to another person commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine of $10,000 or to imprisonment for a term of 12 months.”

In addition, The Royal Barbados Police Force is appealing to members of the public to report anyone responsible for making these calls to the nearest police station.

The Force has also pledged to continue its dialogue with public and private sector agencies.
