Director of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) for the Caribbean Area, Juan Miguel Diez is hoping to improve his office’s collaboration with Government.

He made this known today during a courtesy call on Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Dr. Jerome Walcott, at the Ministry on Culloden Road, St. Michael.

Mr. Diaz explained that the regional UNIC implements strategic communication for the United Nations (UN) via the Caribbean UN platforms; host live streams, conducts outreach sessions by targeting people of all ages on UN agenda issues, specifically those impacting the region.

He said that public awareness on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) needed to result in populations accepting and implementing the SDGs, and through partnerships with Government and other stakeholders, the relevant content to accomplish this could be produced and distributed.

In response, Minister Walcott said the work of the UNIC “sounds exciting”. He acknowledged that more could be done to educate the general public and agreed that it was imperative to get persons to understand the SDGs and how the concepts could be integrated into their lives.

In 2015, 190 countries committed to the 17 SDGs, which include ending poverty and hunger, providing access to quality education and healthcare, as well as fixing climate change.
