Portugal has a new Honorary Consul representing its interests in Barbados. She is Catherine Forter Chee-a-Tow, who has been part of the Caribbean Community for the last 20 years.

Chief of Protocol in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Hughland Allman, presented Mrs. Forter Chee-a-Tow yesterday with the Exequatur, which authorises her to act or carry out certain duties in Barbados on behalf of Portugal.

Mr. Allman welcomed Mrs. Forter Chee-a-Tow to the Honorary Consular Corps and said that the Ministry was eager to work with her to build a deeper relationship between the two countries.

The new Honorary Consul said she was pleased to be representing Portugal, and looked forward to the cultural and economic opportunities that could be created between Barbados and that European State. She also noted that her appointment "serves as a reiteration of Portugal’s friendship towards the people of Barbados".

Mrs. Forter Chee-a-Tow succeeds the late Cecil De Caires as Honorary Consul of Portugal.

Honorary consuls function "as quasi-representatives of foreign governments" in the absence of diplomatic or consular missions. They may provide assistance to distressed nationals of their representative countries, issue visas, or take the lead in the implementation of bilateral initiatives, particularly in the development of commercial linkages.
