Primary school students from Classes Three and Four are being reminded that the deadline for the poster competition to design a Coastal Hazard Mascot is this Thursday, February 28, at 4:00 p.m.
Entries must be submitted to the Department of Emergency Management, No. 30 Warrens Industrial Park, St. Michael, or the Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS), Bay Street, St. Michael. Each completed entry should contain the name of the student, age, school and the name of their class teacher.
The competition, which started on January 16, is being hosted by the Technical Standing Committee on Coastal Hazards in conjunction with the BGIS. The design and creation of a Coastal Hazard Mascot is part of an ongoing effort to engage and educate children about coastal hazards across the island and their potential impact.
Each poster must be original and displayed on Bristol board size 20 x 14 inches, and presented using any medium. Posters will be judged on creativity, colour, concept and originality. They must show a clear picture of what the mascot should look like, and be representative of ALL coastal hazards.
The winning design will be used to create a Coastal Hazard Mascot and the winner will receive an iPad Mini, while the student’s school will get a $1,000 gift certificate. The second prize winner will be awarded a Kindle Fire, while his/her school will receive a $750 gift certificate; the third place winner will take home a digital camera, while the school will be given a $500 gift certificate.
Outstanding designs, not in the top three, will also be used as covers for exercise books, posters and desk planners.
