Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Ronald Jones??(FP)????

Assembly with prayers is still expected to set the tone at the start of the school day in public schools in Barbados.??

This assertion came from Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Ronald Jones recently, while speaking at the awards ceremony of the University of the Southern Caribbean (USC) Alumni, Barbados Chapter, at the Breath of Life Seventh Day Adventist Church.

He contended that "contrary to the belief of some persons, the Ministry of Education ensures that Religion and Character Education and Human Resource Development are taken seriously in the school curriculum."

"…Religious and moral education is one of our curriculum offerings and students are encouraged to participate in Inter School Christian Fellowship meetings at their schools.?? More importantly, embedded within our curriculum offerings is the inculcation of character values such as perseverance, self discipline, respect, responsibility, kindness, integrity and good judgment," he added.

Minister Jones also encouraged the administration at the USC to continue that institution’s objective of incorporating "Character Education" as a paramount feature in all of its programmes. "It is through an all-round education that we can engage the hearts, minds and hands of our citizens in forming their own character", he stressed.

Awardees were former Principal of the Seventh Day Adventist Secondary School; Dr. Norma Niles, current Principal of the Seventh Day Adventist Secondary School, Dr. Cecil Cummins, and retired Senior Tutor and Acting Deputy Principal, Erdiston Teachers’ College, Mr. Winston Mayers. Awards were also given to Dr. Orville Sutton for his contribution to Pastoral Ministry and Julia Alleyne for her achievements in the area of the hospitality and the service industry.??

Professors Oliver Headley and Richard Allsopp were recognised posthumously for work in solar energy and contribution to the development of education, particularly linguistics, respectively.??
