The preliminary round of the National Sports Council’s Inter-Parish Road Tennis Tournament is under way and the stakes are high.

Participants will not only play for glory and honour but also for attractive cash prizes.

Preliminaries started last Sunday with a match at The Crane, St. Philip, and continue Saturday, November 10, with a game at Vauxhall, Christ Church beginning at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 11, with matches at St. Elizabeth, St. Joseph, commencing at 6:00 p.m. and Gall Hill, St. John, starting at 7:00 p.m. They will continue through Saturday, December 1.

The play-offs are scheduled from Wednesday, December 5, to Saturday, December 15. Semifinalists will face off on Friday, January 4, and Saturday, January 5, 2013 – the venues are to be decided. There will also be a celebrity match on January 5. The finals will take place at the Dover Playing Field, Christ Church, on Friday, January 11, and Saturday, January 12.

The Council is seeking to promote the indigenous sport of road tennis throughout communities in Barbados by discovering fresh, emerging talent through the tournament. It is also hoping to use the sport to address the issue of HIV and AIDS. The National HIV Commission will be providing counselling, testing and education awareness at the various venues where the tournament will be played.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners in the following categories: Women?? – $1,400; Men’s Seniors (A) – $1,700, while the runners up will receive $1,400; Men’s (Veterans) – $1,300, runners up will take home $1,000, and Men’s Seniors (B) – $1,200, the runners up will be awarded $1,000. There will also be matches for Junior players and the winners in both the Male and Female categories will receive computers, cellphones and vouchers.

The finals will be televised live on CBC TV8 and there will be prizes for the home audience. Persons should collect registration forms from the National Sports Council, Blenheim House, My Lord’s Hill, St. Michael. For further details on venues and match times, contact the NSC at 430-7700.
