Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has underlined the importance of change, saying it is necessary for survival.

While addressing the first We Gatherin’ 2020 Church Service, at St. Lucy Parish Church on Sunday, Ms. Mottley emphasized that change is inevitable.

“In a very real sense, the biggest challenge that this nation will face over the next few years is the management of change, whether we like it or not.  Life does not remain static.

“One week ago, I did not have to worry as Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs about the prospect of instability in today’s world that may lead to the increase in oil prices.  This morning we do; because actions have been taken globally that go way beyond anything that we on a small island state can control, but in recognition that we are victims of circumstances….  How we shape it and how we respond to it, is completely within our control,” she stated.

Giving the background to We Gatherin’ 2020, the Prime Minister explained to the parishioners that it was foremost about giving flesh to a vision through consultations, as Barbadians must be comfortable, happy, confident, educated, healthy and safe.

She expressed the view that Barbados must work for all people, whether Barbadians, Caribbean people or visitors, and she said it must sustain itself for generations yet unborn, stressing that people should be guardians of the country, rather than try to exploit it at all costs.

Ms. Mottley urged the residents of St. Lucy and those born there, but live in other places, to use this month to reconnect and give back to the parish, not only money but time.

She opined that time was the greatest gift that could be given, alongside love.
