Prime Minister David Thompson was among 15 world leaders who had a special audience with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, last week, following the official opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGOM) in Trinidad and Tobago.

The conference was for all new Heads of Government who were elected since the last CHOGM.??

During the opening ceremony on Friday, the Queen urged members of the Commonwealth to use Trinidad’s motto, "together we aspire, together we achieve," to reach consensus on the issues they would be addressing during the meeting. ??

The theme of this year’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference was "Partnering for a more Equitable and Sustainable Future".??

During the caucus leaders discussed the global economic situation. They also focused heavily on climate change and Commonwealth leaders agreed on a declaration to take forward to the Copenhagen Summit.??

With respect to climate change, there was a special session attended by non-common wealth leaders, including the President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, the President of Denmark, Lars Rasmussin, and Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon.

Barbados’s delegation was lead by Prime Minister David Thompson, and included Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Maxine McClean; Permanent Secretaries in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Prime Minister’s office and Barbados’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
