Prime Minister David Thompson

Mr. Barack Obama
President-Elect of the United States of America
The White House
Washington D.C.

November 5, 2008

Dear Mr. President-Elect

It is with great honour and pleasure that I join with the Government and people of Barbados in extending to you warm congratulations on your election as the 44th President of the United States of America.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1966, Barbados and the United States have maintained and solidified a strong and collaborative relationship based on shared values, the promotion of democratic principles and the rule of law. These relations have served as the basis for numerous initiatives for collaboration and other formal and informal contacts that exist between our two countries, and which propel our on-going friendship and dialogue.

It is my wish that your elevation to the office of the Presidency of your country will allow for the renewal of this relationship by the forging of even closer ties.

I look forward to meeting with you and members of your administration at the earliest opportunity to explore ways in which we can work together with the international community to respond to the global challenges of poverty, security and environmental concerns which call for immediate and concerted effort by all.

I wish you every success in the high office which has been entrusted to you.

Accept, Mr. President-Elect, the assurances of my highest consideration.

David Thompson
Prime Minister
