??
Prime Minister Freundel Stuart (FP)??

Fellow Barbadians

One week has passed since the general election in Barbados on February 21.?? I should like to express my heartfelt thanks to all citizens and residents for taking Barbados peacefully through one of the most exciting and exacting election campaigns in our post-independence history.??

The voters of Barbados have shown the world the democratic??maturity of our 46 year old nation, both during the election and upon the announcement of the results.?? We have emerged from this process with our democratic traditions for the most part intact, though we remain mindful of the obligation to guard jealously against any dilution whatsoever of these cherished traditions.

The unceasing prayer which accompanied the entire election period bore witness to the God-fearing character of our nation, and I thank the churches and the people of Barbados for their prayerful support. I give thanks to God for his many blessings bestowed on Barbados.

I commend the Electoral and Boundaries Commission for its leadership, and I congratulate the parties and candidates for their contribution to the maintenance and reinforcement of democracy in this country.

The elections are now over.?? We are aware of the many challenges that continue to face Barbados. These challenges cannot be successfully faced by a divided country.?? We owe Barbados our total commitment and support, for united we will succeed but divided we are bound to fail.

Let us come together as a nation, continue to give thanks to God, and put our hands to the plough, as we continue, with calm and with renewed energy, on our pathway to progress, on our way towards a better Barbados for all.

As your Prime Minister, I pledge my commitment to maintaining at all times the highest standards of leadership of our beloved Barbados.
