High Commissioner of Ghana to Barbados, Napoleon Abdulai, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley at Parliament on Tuesday.
The High Commissioner was accompanied by his wife, Madame Afi Yakubu, while also representing Barbados in the meeting were Attorney General, Dale Marshall, and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Dr. Jerome Walcott.
During the discussion, Prime Minister Mottley emphasized the need to follow up on matters agreed to when the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, visited Barbados.
She pointed out that a local delegation would be travelling to the African nation in August to finalize arrangements for the recruitment of nurses, including the interview process.
In response, High Commissioner Abudalai revealed that an inter-ministerial committee had been established by the President to prepare for, and facilitate the process of recruiting and relocating the nurses.
The Prime Minister also spoke of the need to open direct air links with Africa, and establish formal relations between the free trade areas of CARICOM and Africa.
Both Prime Minister Mottley and the High Commissioner offered possible airlines that could be approached as partners. According to Prime Minister Mottley, much would have been achieved when ordinary Barbadians and Ghanaians start flying back and forth across the Atlantic.
Travel between Africa and the Caribbean, she said, has now to be one of deliberate action by those who travel to reconnect, rather than being characterized by the “Middle Passage” and slavery.
