Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley will deliver the feature address at the Errol Walton Barrow Centenary Gala and Fundraising Dinner this Saturday, January 18, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

Over 400 persons are expected to attend this gala, which is being hosted by the Errol and Nita Barrow Educational Trust. Governor General Dame Sandra Mason is the patron of the event.

Chairman of the Trust, Professor Avinash Persaud, said over the past 29 years, over $1 million in grants had been awarded to more than 150 students from Barbados and the Caribbean.

Professor Persaud continued: “The Government’s development model is centred on raising the skills of all Barbadians to allow us to command better livelihoods, but although education is once more at the core of the Barbadian development model, education must mean something different today than back in ‘66.

“Today, education has to be about empowerment, not just employment; it has to extend beyond school and college and it has to help all of us fly and soar, not just walk. I believe The Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow would have agreed with that.”

He explained that the students studied various areas such as graphic design, environmental science, cultural industries, accounting and social media marketing.

“We give grants for anything that’s relevant to the development of the Caribbean today, and we are not stuck to traditional areas,” he added.
