Today marks a historic moment in the development of energy in the Caribbean region.

As we inaugurate this Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE) today in Barbados, I have the greatest pleasure, on behalf of the Government and people of Barbados, in hosting our CARICOM neighbours, partners and a distinguished group of committed national and international supporters to this opening ceremony.

I extend an especially warm greeting to the representatives of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), the Austrian Government, and SIDS DOCK for their indefatigable efforts in facilitating the establishment of this facility. To those of you who are visiting us for the first time I urge you to return as soon as you can!

History has shown that man???s sojourn on this planet has been marked through the ages by his success in finding, harnessing and exploiting new sources of energy, from the use of the sun and fire through to the use of fossil fuels ( coal, oil, and natural gas), enhanced in recent years by the transition to nature???s gifts of cleaner and renewable sources of energy such as solar energy, wind energy, thermal energy and hydro power.
