His Royal Highness (HRH) Prince Henry of Wales paid a surprise mid-day visit to the Medical Intensive Care (MIC) and the Paediatric Units of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) today.

The visit came after changes to his schedule, as a result of yesterday’ s flood, which caused the postponement of The Reveal of the 50th Anniversary Monument until today, and the Independence Parade ceremony to Thursday, December 1.

HRH was met on arrival by Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Dexter James, and other senior medical officials of the hospital.

During his hour-long visit, Prince Harry, as he is familiarly known, met with members of staff and patients of the recently opened MIC, and spoke with patients and their families about their health challenges.

HRH also showed keen interest in the welfare of the 24 children housed in the Pediatric Unit and listened attentively to their stories, as recounted by their parents.

At the end of the tour, MIC Consultant Dr. Alok Kumar gave Prince Harry a detailed account of the capacity of the unit and the importance of its role in providing critical care for patients with cardiac failure, kidney and respiratory ailments.

Dr. Kumar told HRH that Barbados allowed for a dual or pluralistic type of care, where patients had the option of state-funded care or entirely private-funded care.

Prince Harry‘s official visit to Barbados for its 50th Anniversary of Independence celebrations will end on Friday, when he departs for Guyana.
