A proposal to recognise Prison Officers for their meritorious service will soon be submitted to Cabinet.

Superintendent of Prisons, Lieutenant Colonel John Nurse, made this announcement during a recent medal ceremony at HMP Dodds where several Prison Officers received the Queen???s Diamond Jubilee Award, the Humanitarian Award, the Service Medal and the Clasp to the Service Medal Award.

The Superintendent told those present that the Prison would be asking for a mechanism to recognise the meritorious service of its officers.
???Within the ranks, there are officers whose character, steadfastness and commitment shines bright like diamonds,??? he stated.

The Superintendent of Prisons told the audience that included Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs, Adriel Brathwaite, that Prison Officers were born optimists who believed that people could change. ???That is why we do what we do. We are here for the long haul,??? he said.

He added that volunteers also provided a tremendous service to the prison without financial or other rewards.

Mr. Brathwaite presented 77 officers, including Colonel Nurse with the Diamond Jubilee Award. Meanwhile, two officers received the Humanitarian award, 13 the Service Medal, and nine the Clasp to the Service Medal.

In congratulating the officers on their awards, the Minister gave the assurance that he would continue to champion their cause. He also signaled his ???extreme??? appreciation for the work being done by the volunteers, noting that there was always room for more.??
