The Barbados Prison Service will commence its anniversary celebrations with a week of activities from Sunday, October 9, until Saturday, October 15, under the theme Bridging the Gap between the Community and the Prison.

A church service will take place this Sunday, October 9, at the St. John Parish Church, beginning at 9:00 a.m. During the week there will be an Open Day and exhibition on Tuesday, October 11, at the prison’s Dodds, St. Philip grounds, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It will feature works of art and craft by inmates and members of the public will be able to order and purchase furniture, poultry and produce.

Also on this day at noon, members of the Barbados Cancer Society will be on hand to give inmates and staff of HMP Dodds a lecture on breast cancer and screening.

Later that day, there will be a variety of games including a netball match, where prison officers will come up against clubs from Church Village, The Police Boys and Girls Club and Kings Park. A dominoes match will also be on the cards and prison officers will match their skills against those teams from Defence and Security, Prime Minister’s Office and the Barbados Defence Force. ?????????????????????? In addition, prison officers will also show their skills in a game of basketball. All matches will commence at 4:00 p.m. and will be played simultaneously.

The following day, Wednesday, October 12, the Lionel Maloney 20/20 Cricket Challenge Shield Tournament will take place featuring teams from the Barbados Prison Service and the Barbados Defence Force. The tournament will be held at Padmore Village, St. Philip, from noon until 5:00 p.m. The public is invited.

Staff will participate in a variety of indoor games on Thursday, October 13, at the prison from 5:00 p.m.; while on Friday, October 14, a special tour of the facility will be given to children of staff members, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

One of the highlights of the week will be the Superintendent’s Anniversary Parade, which comes off on Friday, October 14, at HMP, Dodds, St. Philip. Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs, Adriel Brathwaite, will deliver the feature address during the ceremony, while Superintendent of Prisons, Lieutenant Colonel John Nurse, will present his annual report. This will begin at 2:00 p.m.

Celebrations will come to a climax on Saturday, October 15, in the form of a Health Fair at the prison. There will be exercise segments and line dancing from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. and the public is invited.
