Government is pleased with the response of the private sector to the global recession.

This sentiment was expressed by Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Chris Sinckler, as he addressed the Annual General Meeting of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry yesterday at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

Mr. Sinckler noted the private sector’s reaction reflected a maturity in working with government to restore the financial and economic stability of the country and ultimately maintain its social fabric.

He said: " … I believe that this country owes a debt of gratitude to all of you, whether in your individual capacities, or as a collective, for your commitment, … dedication to duty, and penchant for perseverance in the quest to make Barbados the best little country in the world."

Attesting to the strength of the existing banking system "and a private sector overflowing with ideas", the Finance Minister stressed it was the duty, both of government and the private sector to work as part of team Barbados, to deploy these assets to further the cause for economic and social development. "The people of Barbados expect nothing less from us," he added.

He told the gathering of business persons that as a result of what was happening in the global arena, Government was carefully examining ways to reposition the economy so that Barbados could maintain the level of sophistication to which it had become accustomed.
