The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) decreased by 10.6 per cent in January 2015, compared with the previous month.

The drop in the index was due to declines in manufacturing production by 16.1 per cent and the consumption of electricity, gas and water by 4.1 per cent.

Conversely, an increase of 35.9 per cent was recorded in the Mining and Quarrying Sector.??The IIP for January 2015 decreased by 2.7 per cent when compared with January 2014.

The Manufacturing index decreased by 5.2 per cent and Electricity, Gas and Water production fell by 0.4 per cent. An increase of 19.1 per cent was recorded in the Mining and Quarrying index.

Output for the Mining and Quarrying Sector grew by 19.1 per cent at the end of January, compared with the previous year, with an increase in the production of stone quarrying by 29.9 per cent. However, a decrease of 7.8 per cent was reflected within the Mining sub-sector.

Production in the Electricity, Gas and Water Sector fell by 0.4 per cent when compared with the previous year, due to a decrease in the generation of water by 7.9 per cent and natural gas by 5.6 per cent. The index for Electricity generation increased by 1.7 per cent.

In the Manufacturing Sector, year on year output for January 2015 decreased by 5.2 per cent mainly due to declines in the sub-sectors for Beverages and Tobacco (23.4 per cent); Chemicals (7.1 per cent); Non-Metallic Minerals (12.9 per cent) and Other Manufacturing (0.5 per cent).

Increases were recorded in the index for Food (0.7 per cent); Wearing Apparel (100.1 per cent); Wooden Furniture (24.2 per cent) and Electronic Components (2.4 per cent).
