Senator Harry Husbands, told primary and secondary school students today that there is a significant link between the development of public speaking skills at an early age and future success in life.

Delivering the feature address at the launch of the Team Action International Inc. Speech Festival at the 3Ws Oval, Cave Hill Campus, UWI, Senator Husbands identified many prominent Barbadians, who, he said, excelled at debating in school and went on to become politicians, attorneys-at-law, members of the clergy and leaders in business.

He urged the students to take their participation in the festival seriously and apply the same diligence that they would apply to their school work, since the development of public speaking skills would also impact their academic success.

???Your ability to speak well will positively impact your ability to write well and help you to develop your language skills. All this leads to the enhancement of your comprehension skills which then impacts a variety of other skills, such as those necessary for mathematics, science and foreign languages.???

He thanked the sponsors of the festival, Team Action International Inc., and also the United Nations Children???s Fund, for providing the opportunity for Barbadian school children.

Senator Husbands noted that Government relied on non-governmental organisations to support and enhance its efforts, and was very grateful to the private sector for its involvement in the process.
