The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) has commissioned an independent assessment to ascertain the true cost of the damage caused by flooding in several departments there today.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr. Dexter James said initial observations suggested that the flood resulted from an operational failure in plumbing works in the cardiac suite of the Lions Eye Care Centre which is under construction.

Meanwhile, the Accident and Emergency Department has been cleaned, sanitised and restored to full operation.

Works in progress include replacing a few, water-logged ceiling tiles which should be completed in a few days. However, according to the CEO, this will not affect patient care.??

Antenatal patients with scheduled appointments were relocated to the delivery ward while haematology patients, particularly those in anti-coagulation, were given medication and their appointments renewed.

Damage to these areas was confined to ceiling tiles and a few mattresses on examination tables.

Dr. James has confirmed that both the Antenatal and Haematology clinics will be fully functional by 8:30 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, June 6. The CEO lauded management and staff for "diligently responding to this adverse, internal event in a timely manner". ??

He explained that this was necessary in order to provide a safe and sanitary environment for patients and staff and thanked the public for their patience and cooperation.
