Members of the public should expect planned electrical outages at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) from this Sunday, March 4, as it transfers circuits from its old electrical plant to its new energy centre.

The process, part of the hospital’s Electrical Upgrade Project, is expected to last approximately six to eight weeks but medical procedures will continue as usual.

Director of Engineering Services at the QEH, Paula Agbowu, said there would be some delays and interruptions in service but these would be kept to a minimum as a number of contingencies will be implemented.

"Every department in the hospital will be affected at least once over the two-month period, as each circuit from the old electrical board will need to be transferred to the new board. While the transfers will be sequenced, not all areas will be impacted simultaneously," explained Mrs. Agbowu.

This Sunday, both the QEH Pharmacy and Cafeteria will be closed. Mrs. Agbowu said once all of the circuits have been transferred, the QEH Electrical Upgrade Project will come to an end.

She noted that the new energy centre is expected to provide the QEH with full standby power and the capacity to install new plant and equipment – inclusive of additional air-conditioning – across the plant.
